Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)Irritable bowel syndrome

IBS is a common condition which affects around 20% of the population. Symptoms can range from being unpleasant to debilitating and can significantly affect quality of life. They include:

Gastro-intestinal symptoms:

  • constipation, diarrhoea (or both)
  • wind
  • bloating
  • pain
  • nausea
  • reflux

Non gastro-intestinal symptoms:

  • Fatigue
  • Irritable bladder
  • Muscle or joint pain
  • Foggy head
  • Low mood/depression

Research has developed over the last few years to recognise that diet can play a significant role in IBS symptoms and management. Liane has 20 years’ experience helping individuals manage IBS symptoms through altering their diet to discover what can and can’t be tolerated whilst ensuring that the diet remains nutritionally balanced. This may involve adjusting fibre intake or trialling an exclusion diet such as one that is low in fermentable carbohydrates (known as the low FODMAP diet) or a lactose or gluten free diet. Liane will decide with you once she has taken a detailed diet and medical history which is approach to trial and whether any tests or investigations may be helpful.
